A  good microscope is an important tool for any activated sludge plant. Information about the condition of the system can be obtained by observing the types and abundances of protozoa. Filamentous ("string-forming") organisms-- which may cause settling or foaming problems-- can be observed and identified, as well. Here a slide is being placed on the viewing stage.
